Preventative
Maintenance
To insure long life and efficiency, your water heater should be
periodically inspected by a qualified service person.
1. At least every three months, a qualified service person should
inspect the complete venting system for possible leaks caused by
cracks or loose connections. Inspect for and remove any obstructions
in the draft diverter or venting system. Remove each flue baffle
from the water heater and examine it for any build-up of soot or
carbon deposits. Clean the baffle with a water dampened rag only
and replace it, making sure it is properly suspended in the flue
opening by the baffle support. After complete inspection, replace
any corroded piping and reassemble, making sure all connections
are rigid and leak free. Never operate the water heater without
the draft diverter and the proper venting installed.
2. At least every three months visually inspect the burner while
in operation. The flame should be blue with yellow tips. A blue-orange
flame is characteristic of operation with L.P. Gas. If unusual burner
operation or flame pattern is observed, contact a qualified service
person immediately. Shut off water heater. If cleaning the burner
is necessary, the complete burner assembly should be removed from
the water heater. A vacuum or mild detergent solution can be used
to clean the burner. Care should be taken to avoid accidental blockage
of any burner ports.
3. The appliance area must be kept clear and free from combustible
materials, gasoline and other flammable vapors and liquids. Do not
store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors or liquids in the
vicinity of this or any other appliance.
4. Do not obstruct the flow of combustion air and ventilation air.
5. Removal of hard water deposits. To extend the life of your water
heater it is advisable to drain a few quarts of water from the tank
monthly. This will enable the accumulated hard water deposits to
be dislodged from the bottom of the tank. If left to accumulate,
these deposits can create a rumbling or pounding sound in your water
heater as well as reduce tank life and efficiency. Make certain
the drain valve is completely closed after draining. It is strongly
recommended that the tank be flushed every six months. WARNING:
THE WATER DISCHARGED FROM THIS VALVE CAN BE HOT AND INCREASE THE
RISK OF SCALD INJURY. All models are equipped with a cleanout opening
to aid in the removal of hard water deposits from the tank bottom.
Perform the following at least every 3 months: Drain the water heater.
Remove the cleanout jacket cover and tank cover. When cleaning the
tank, care must be taken to avoid trying to break deposits loose
- this could damage the glass lining and shorten the life of the
water heater. After cleaning, replace the cleanout tank cover and
jacket cover, and refill with water.
6. A yearly test of the temperature and pressure relief valve operation
should be made to assure that it works freely. Lift the lever and
allow several gallons of water to flow through the discharge line
to an open drain. Close the relief valve lever, wait ten minutes,
and check that no water is still flowing from the discharge line.
7. The anode rods should be inspected at least every three months
for corrosion. Shut off water heater and drain. Remove the anode
rods and inspect for exposed core wire. If 3 inches or more of core
wire is exposed, replace the anode. When reinstalling thew anodes,
be sure there are no leaks at the connections. Never operate the
water heater without the correct anode rods in place.
